Poetry Reading in Syracuse Saturday February 17, 2018

Dear friends. I’m giving a poetry reading next Saturday, February 17 as part of a LiterarY Dinner in support of the Syracuse YMCA Arts Branch and The Downtown Writer’s Center and all of the amazing and valuable work they do in the community. The cost for attending is $50. I’ll be reading my poetry for ten minutes. The evening will also include a prose reading by novelist Cheryl Reed. There’ll be music. There’ll be food. There’ll be great fun.

Brrr, it’s cold. If you have been with us in the past, you know this is a fantastically warm party for the coldest month! If you are new to the Y programs, you’ll find it’s a terrific community of truly caring people. Please join us for the annual LiterarY Dinner in support of the YMCA Arts Branch and the Downtown Writers Center. The Y Arts Branch offers extraordinary programs that enrich our town.
The evening includes dinner, wine, entertainment and fabulous company.
For more than a decade, members of the cultural community all over Syracuse host dinners in their homes to raise money for the Y Arts Branch and its programs. All the hospitality is donated and poets and writers and musicians donate their services too.
A tax-deductible donation of $50 per person is requested (please RSVP and bring cash or a check with you on that evening made out to YMCA Syracuse). Every dollar raised goes to the Y arts programs that enrich our town and bring arts to children of our community.
So, for the cost of a dinner out, you get dinner out AND entertainment AND a whole lot more fun AND do some tax-deductible good….We hope you can join us!

I’m Reading in Buffalo NY Tomorrow!

Along with poets Ed Tato and Devon Moore, I’ll be reading my poems tomorrow, Saturday March 4, 2017 at 4pm at Rust Belt Books in Buffalo (415 Grant St, Buffalo, NY 14213-1140).  Admission is free, refreshments will be provided, and the poems will help melt all this March snow. If you’re in the area, swing (or cross-country ski) on by!

 

I’m Reading at Kent State University on October 5

Friends! I’m thoroughly jazzed to announce that I’ve been invited to read at Kent State University on October 5.

This event is a reading and discussion of the flash fiction/prose poem/flash nonfiction linked sequence. I’ll be reading/discussing along with Nin Andrews, F. Daniel Rzicznek, Kathleen McGookey, Lucas Southworth and Molly Fuller, some of my fellow contributors to Nothing to Declare: A Guide to the Flash Sequence (White Pines Press, 2016). It’s open to the public and should be a gas. If you’re in the area, swing on by!

Nothing to Declare: Flash Fiction Sequences (White Pine Press/Marie Alexander Series, 2016) is the first anthology of this emerging hybrid form. Part prose poetry, micro fiction, or flash fiction, and often a collage of more than one, the flash fiction sequences laces together various stand alone pieces of writing into related larger works.

Reading and discussion will take place at Kent State University; room to be announced.

I just spent a delightful lunch hour being interviewed about contemporary American poetry, prose poetry, and my book The Maintenance of the Shimmy-Shammy by Grant Reeher, Director of the Campbell Public Affairs Institute at Syracuse University. My 24-minute interview is scheduled to air this Sunday at 6pm on The Campbell Conversations on the NPR station WRVO Public Media.

I’m reading poetry Feb 6 2016 for the Syracuse YMCA LiterarY Brunch

Hi Central New York friends. I’m giving a poetry reading Saturday, February 6 at 11 a.m. as part of the 11th Annual LiterarY Dinner series of The Arts Branch of the Syracuse YMCA to support their After School Arts Programs, serving over 850 children in Syracuse’s inner city. The cost is a tax-deductable donation of $40, and you get a great brunch at the home of Judy Carr, fine company, and me reading poems! The Downtown Writer’s Center August Occasion Writing Retreat

A huge, massive, thundering thank you to Phil Memmer, Georgia Popoff, and to my students and my fellow instructors at The Downtown Writer’s Center August Occasion Writing Retreat last month at the Harding Farm in Clinton, NY. That was an amazing and inspiring day.
This was also the first time I read aloud from my new book, The Maintenance of the Shimmy-Shammy. An experience I won’t ever forget.
